Overview of the EAST AFIRCAN RIFT VALLEY SYSTEM (click on the map for an enlarged view)
The two branches of East Africa's Rift Valley system slice southwards through the continent for a distance of 5600km. ‘Uganda’s Great Rift Valley’ describes the Albertine section that follows the Uganda - Congo border for almost 500km between the Virunga volcanoes and Lake Albert.
The first part of the book describes the formation of the rift; its human history (including hominid evolution, the rift’s traditional kingdoms, and the first explorers); and its diverse wildlife populations. The second explores the valley's main features, moving north from the Virungas, past the Bwindi forest, the Rwenzori mountains, the Semliki valley and Lake Albert to Murchison Falls on the Nile.
Central African forests merge with the grasslands of East Africa within the Albertine Rift Valley to support a remarkable biodiversity. This is protected by a series of parks and reserves, including Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi Impenetrable, Kibale and Murchison Falls.
The above topics are reinforced by numerous colour photographs and historic engravings as well as 24 colour maps that show the regions of the rift; the national parks; the development of its landscapes over time, including the formation of the Nile; and the routes of the Victorian explorers.
